Masale Bhat

A must to try, mouth watering recipe of Maharastra...Masale Bhat is a very popular and famous dish among Marathis...and this delicious recipe brought back my memories of hostel days at Bangalore..I learned this dish from my friend/roomie Nisha Patil during those memorable days at hostel....When ever she went home, we demanded for Masale Bhat prepared by aunty(her mom) and it was always me, who ate more than anybody else..hee hee...:-P...I love those days at hostel, those friends/roomies r awesome and unforgettable, learned a lot of things from all of them...:-)



I Cooked this with Jaipuri Murgh Masala and the combo was absolutely delicious...U can try it with any curry or have it with curd/raita/pickle....Sharing the yummy recipe of  Masale Bhat with u people to try out......:-)

Serves :- 2 to 3 people

Ingredients :-


  1. Basmati Rice - 1 1/2 cup
  2. Potato - 1 medium, cubed
  3. Cauliflower florets- 1/2 cup
  4. Green Peas - 1/2 cup
  5. Onion - 1 medium, sliced
  6. Tomato - 1 small, chopped
  7. Cinnamon - 1/2'' stick
  8. Cloves - 3-4
  9. Bay Leaf - 1
  10. Green Chilli - 1
  11. Mustard Seeds - 1/2 tsp
  12. Curry Leaves - 3-4
  13. Goda Masala - 1 tsp
  14. Red Chilli Powder - 1 tsp
  15. Turmeric Powder - 1/4 tsp
  16. Ginger Paste - 1 tsp
  17. Hing - A Pinch
  18. Oil
  19. Salt to taste
  20. Few Chopped Coriander Leaves and spring onion.


Jaipuri Murgh Masala

Method :-


  1. Wash and soak rice in water for 30 min.
  2. Heat oil, add cinnamon, cloves, bay leaf, mustard seed, hing, curry leaves and sliced onion.
  3. Saute them till onion turns to light brown color.
  4. Add turmeric powder with grin chilli, ginger paste and cook for 1-2 min.
  5. Now add goda masala with red chilli powder and cook for 2-3 min.
  6. Add potato, cauliflower, green peas, salt to taste with some water.
  7. Mix , cover and cook for 5 min.
  8. Add rice with tomatoes and required amount of water .
  9. Cover and cook for 5 min in high flame.
  10. Then reduce the flame to medium and cook for 10 min.
  11. After this reduce the flame to low and cook again for 15 min.
  12. Now let it rest for 5-10 min.
  13. Garnish with chopped coriander leaves and spring onions.
  14. Serve hot...



I prepared this Goda Masala 1st, this is the most important thing used in Maharastrian cooking. It is very easy to make and can be stored in air tight container for several months..


Ingredients for Goda Masala :-

Coriander Seed - 1 Cup
Cumin Seed - 1/4 cup
White Sesame Seed - 1/3 cup
Cloves - 2 tbsp
Big Cardamom - 2 tbsp
Cinnamon Stick - 2 tbsp
Bay Leaf - 1/2 cup
Black Peppercorn - 2 tbsp
Oil to roast the spices - 1-2 tsp

Method for preparing Goda Masala :-


  1. Heat oil in a pan/kadhai and roast all the spices together till they turn dark in color.
  2. Make sure to keep stiring to avoid burnt spices.
  3. Once cool, grind them to make a fine powder and store in an air tight container.


Note :-
  • Some people also add dried coconut in this masala, i skipped that as coconut gives an oily smell, if kept for too long time.
  • U can substitute Goda Masala with Garam masala..
  • U can try it in pressure cooker or even in microwave and let me know the process..;-)
